Tube Style Bird Feeders

Types of Bird Feeders

Putting up a bird feeder is the easiest way to begin attracting birds to your yard, but the number of birdfeeders available can be a little overwhelming.

Here is a quick reference guide to the different types of bird feeders and the benefits of each.

Tube Feeders

tube bird feeders

Tube bird feeders are usually made of a clear plastic tube and can have either plastic or metal caps, bases and perches.  Tube bird feeders keep seed fairly clean and dry, and if they have metal feeding ports they are somewhat squirrel resistant.  Tube bird feeders come in a wide assortment of types and sizes, each designed to fit the needs of different species of birds.

Triple tube bird feeders feature three separate tubes that can be emptied  independently.  The advantages of triple tube bird feeders include being able to attracttriple tube bird feeders a wider variety of birds if each of the tubes is filled with a different type of bird seed.  Or, if you prefer to just use one seed type, having three tubes of seed means less refills are needed.

When using a variety of seeds in triple tube bird feeders, you may want to consider the kind of birds you wish to attract.  Black-Oil Sunflower seeds attract cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, titmice and jays.

finch bird feeders

Nyjer seed and Thistle seed attract a variety of finches.  There are special tube bird feeders for this seed type because of the smaller seed.  Some tube style bird feeders have reversible feeding ports which change the tube bird feeders from seed bird feeders to nyjer/thistle bird feeders.

In addition, upside down bird feeders assure that finches will be the only diners since they are one of the very few birds that have the ability to eat upside down.

Mixed Seed attracts a wide variety of birds, so this is also a popular choice for tube bird feeders.  This type of seed comes in different blends.

Filling tube bird feeders

When purchasing  tube bird feeders, check to see how easily they can be filled.  If you are purchasing a triple tube bird feeder, check to see if the ports can be switched from mixed seed to thistle/nyjer.

Fill your triple tube feeders with each of the above seed types and enjoy watching the many different kinds of birds as they flock to feast at your bird feeders!
