Hairy Woodpecker

Hairy Woodpecker

Amazingly there are more than 17 subspecies of the Hairy Woodpecker! They live at many different elevations and habitat areas and have some small variations in their appearance.

The bill of this woodpecker is almost as long as its head, allowing it to drill further into trees to reach the delicious insects.

Nesting Habits of the Hairy Woodpecker

The Hairy Woodpecker does not actually build a nest; rather it nest in holes inside trees growing in wooded areas or in suburban yards. It will also use a hole in a large branch.

It does not add anything to the hole, very unlike other birds who line their nests with soft grasses and other natural materials.

The female Hairy Woodpecker lays 3-7 white eggs inside the hole.
