Appearance of the Song Sparrow Although the male and female Song Sparrows in a region look alike, its looks differ from region to region varying in both coloring and size. For example, in the Northwest, the Song Sparrow is darker than in the Southwest. These songbirds generally reach a length of 5-7 inches and a weight between half an ounce to a little over 1 3/4 ounces. Interestingly, the male Song Sparrow attracts females and defends his territory through his vocalizations. He will also use aggressive actions to deter other males from entering his territory. Geography of the Song Sparrow The Song Sparrow is found throughout North America, from Alaska and Canada southward throughout the United States and into parts of northern Mexico. There are 39 subspecies of Song Sparrow throughout its range. Migration of the Song Sparrow usually only occurs in the areas of the its range which are furthest north. They do not make large migrations nor travel long distances for the migrations. Local Environments of the Song Sparrow The Song Sparrow prefers somewhat open areas covered in shrubs and thickets. It will also live in wooded areas that are not particularly dense. If in drier regions, it will live close to a source of water along the edges of streams and ponds.
