Lyric® Nyjer® Seed
Lyric® Nyjer® Seed has been shown to be one of the most popular single seeds for finches by a test known as PROJECT WILDBIRD, which ran from 2005 to 2008.
Each 3 lb bag of Lyric® Nyjer® Seed is filled with niger from Africa and Asia, not Indian niger or the North American thistle plant (for which is has been incorrectly nick-named). Though these oilseeds are very small, they have a lot of nutrients to take care of a finch's energy needs. Our Nyjer® seed provides a guaranteed 25% fat, 15% protein, and 25% fiber.
It is important to note that niger seed is required to be heated to prevent germination before it can be sold in the United States. Our Nyjer® seed follows all required guidelines and will not sprout if seed falls on the ground by your feeder.
Nyjer® seed, also known as thistle seed or niger seed, attracts the following finch species: American Goldfinches, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, House Finches and Lesser Goldfinches.
Lyric® Nyjer® Ingredients: Guizotia Abyssinica, common name Nyjer® Seed.
Storage Instructions: Store your Nyjer® seed in an air-tight container to keep them from drying out. Birds will not eat dried out Nyjer® seed.

Lyric® Nyjer® Seed - FAQs
Q: What is Nyger® Seed?
A: Nyjer® is the seed derived from a plant cultivated in Ethiopia, India, Myanmar and Nepal. Nyjer® seed is often called niger seed or thistle seed. The seed falls off the flowering portion of the plant and is collected for use in bird feeders.
Though it's often called thistle seed, it's not related to the weeds North Americans know as thistle.
Q: Will other birds or animals eat Nyjer® seed?
A: Generally, only finches and a few sparrows will eat Nyjer®. Most other animals, squirrels in particular, will not eat Nyjer®. That means your feeders should be a birds-only zone!
Q: Will Nyjer® sprout seedlings below my finch feeder?
A: No. Nyjer® seed has been heated to 250 degrees prior to packaging. This devitalizes the seed, making it inert and unable to germinate.
