Q: What's the difference between Sucrose, Dextrose and Fructose?
A: Hummingbird nectars mixed with Sucrose deliver energy quicker to hummingbirds because sucrose is digested faster by the birds. Dextrose and Fructose, which are often used by other companies in their hummingbird nectar, fail to mimic the key properties of the natural flower nectar that serves as fuel for hummingbirds. Quite simply, nectar mixes based on dextrose and fructose will not convert to energy as efficiently as Perky-Pet’s 100% sucrose formula.
Q: Why buy nectar concentrate?
A: Perky-Pet offers a variety of choices for people looking to buy hummingbird food. You can by pre-mixed, ready-to-use liquid hummingbird food. You can also purchase packets of powdered mix. Concentrate is great because it’s easy to store—just put the resealed jug underneath the sink—and doesn’t require much mixing. Just pour one-part concentrate in with three-parts water, stir a few times and you’re set to fill your feeder.
Q: How do I keep my feeder from spilling?
A: First off, we advise you to carefully read the instructions that came with your feeder and check YouTube for instructional videos. Also be aware that there are top-fill and bottom-fill feeders, so there are some differences in how to fill both kinds without spilling any nectar. But you want practical advice, right? Here you go: We usually hold our feeders by their hanging hooks rather than the body of the feeder. Holding them by their hanging hooks lets gravity keep them level, and that keeps them from spilling.
