Best Hummer Feeder By Anon 13

I have had the Magnolia Hummingbird feeders for over six years. They are the best. I have five of them and none of them leak, so let me offer some suggestions. The small red circular piece that the clear container screws into will only fit into the base part in one direction. It has four tabs 90 degrees apart that will fit it into the base IF a fifth locating tab is oriented correctly. If this isn't correct you will get leaks. Once you have assembled, filled with nectar, hung, and pulled to open the nectar flow there is one last thing to do. Tap the bottle or bottom a few time to get a few bubbles to up through the nectar. This will ensure that the nectar has flowed into the bottom are the hummers to drink it. I use clear vinegar and water to clean the Hummingbird feeders. Hummingbirds do not like soap and they can detect a very small amount of it. The vinegar doesn't seem to bother them if there is a small trace left. There have been studies done on this (search online) and it seems true with my Hummers in California. I have tried many other Hummingbird feeders and the Magnolia works better than any of the others. Highly recommended.

Great Little Feeder By ImNoHero
Great little feeder. Easy to clean and fill. On the leaking complaints you have to tighten the two bottom halfs. Then tighten the clear container. I have had zero leaks

Leaks! By Dlb1591
I have the same problem as many users - this feeder leaks, no matter how carefully and tightly it is assembled. Sometimes a slow drip, sometimes a stead drip, drip, drip. Leaks around flower stems and around seam where two bottom halves screw together with no sealing gasket. Rarely, I will get it together and it won't leak, but then the birds won't use it - they will try it then move on to another feeder. I searched through many feeders at several stores looking for a bee-proof feeder before buying this one. (Sadly, I did not check online reviews first!). As to the bees, true, they cannot get to the nectar through the flower ports, but they can get plenty around the flower bases and around the seam where the bottom halves screw together. So I always have lots of bees around whenever I decide to give this feeder another try. I keep thinking I must just be doing something wrong, but now that I have read the reviews, I know it is the product, not me. Unfortunately, I bought this a year ago, so can't return it - and I don't want to give it away to the thrift store and saddle some unsuspecting person with it, so guess it is just junk to be thrown away. I agree with others that the concept is good - that's what led me to buy this feeder - but it is poorly designed and should be replaced.

We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for the experience. A leak or drip is often caused by direct sunlight or high temperatures which causes the nectar to expand. Hummingbirds often prefer to feed in shaded, sheltered environments. Placing the feeders in the shade will make the hummingbirds happy, as well as help prevent leaking.

Keep in mind that our feeders are covered by a one year replacement warranty. We encourage all of our customers to contact our Consumer Relations Team if a feeder is not working properly. We can be reached at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973).

Love it! By Humming22
Make sure you follow instructions!! I almost discarded it... it leaked so bad. Then I went online to watch the video, took it apart completely and followed instructions mindfully - and it works! It's the best feeder because it's SO easy to clean. I love it, thank you for a great product :-) the hummingbirds are grateful.

Useless - leaks like a faucet By hummyfeeder
After wasting a lot of time and much nectar, I finally gave up on this feeder. It does not work right. As soon as you pour the nectar in, all of it leaks out in seconds.
I even watched the video on how to fill it and followed the instructions exactly but got the same results every time.

Best feeder yet! By Papi Joe
I have a total of 7 of these feeders and think they are outstanding. Very easy to fill and clean. The Hummers around our house swarm the feeders and it is such a pleasure to sit and watch them. I have actually had one start land on the perch while I was trying to hang it up.
I do agree with some of the comments though as the last two feeders that I bought leak almost every time I use them. I have tried everything to stop the leaking but with no luck so far. After all, with owing 7 of these feeders, I do know how to make them work. Even though 2 of my feeders give me fits, I still think the Magnolia Top Fill Feeder is the best on the market. Thank you Perky-Pet.

Leaky model-company should replace complimentary By Bird lovers
They may have a piece that doesn't leak for the video, but there is clearly no quality control in place to ensure what they are selling works. Good idea, but does not work. Nectar leaks out the bottom. The birds do not like it. You should replace this complimentary.

Great concept, but ... By Medservant
After reading instructions, watching the video, and watching all the nectar come out of the flowers in a steady stream until completely empty, we gave up and returned it. ATTENTION DESIGNERS: those flowers can't be securely enough locked into the base to avoid breaking the vacuum! Please re-design because top-loading is a great concept!

Even the hummers hate it By Peabee
The perches are incredibly flimsy and the birds do not light long. The birds appear to struggle to get to the sugar water and leave immediately and go to a different feeder. They empty other feeders in a few hours and this one holds the water for days. I have gone out to repop the top and get the water flowing time and time again. It does not flow properly and when you try to get the bottom filled, it leaks. Unlike others on this review list, mine doesn't leak all of the time, but it doesn't appear to flow the way it should when the top is pulled either. I watched the video and read the reviews. After talking to customer service, it appears this feeder gets lots of complaint calls. This is not worth the hassle. I would rather refill the bottom pour type with an old pan to catch the remnant in the base than deal with the constant fiddling with this one. I took it down and will see if any other standard base I have on hand fits the threaded lid before I pitch it. I read one review from Anonymous that said the seven they use are the best ever. So I am wondering how these can be so all over the spectrum in user satisfaction.

Patty : Consumer Relations Representative
We appreciate your feedback and apologize for this experience. When the base, bottle, and lid are all attached firmly before pulling the top up to release the nectar into the base, the feeder should not leak. Very high temperatures can cause occasional leaking, though.

We would like to better understand what is happening with this feeder and take the opportunity to make it right. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) for additional assistance.

Poor design By Vick The Stick
I was excited to see this feeder on sale yesterday. I bought it as a second station for my backyard. I was very disappointed. As I poured the water in, it just as quickly poured out when you "opened" it. I have trying to seal it because I do like the look of it. My current feeder it a much better design. I cannot return this as I had thrown out my receipt.

Hello Vick,

Thank you for sharing this feedback. When filling this feeder, it is very important to ensure that all parts of the base, bottle and lid are tightly secured before pulling up on the bottle to open the ports. This feeder uses push-pull technology similar to that of a sports bottle and must be tightened to create a sufficient vacuum seal.

We apologize for this experience and would like to offer additional assistance. Please feel free to contact us at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) for additional assistance.

Q&A
Q.Just bought a new one but can't figure how to open top.  Is that a thick film that needs to pulled off?
A.

The red top should screw off to allow filling from the top.

Q.I can't get it to release liquid
A.

To open nectar reservoir - hold base with one hand and pull up on the container with the other to open ports for feeding. Your feeder is now ready.

Q.I can't get it to release liquid
A.

When filling this feeder, it is very important that the two halves of the base are tightened well. Also, the bottle must be pushed down onto the base to close off the ports before filling. Once the feeder is filled, tighten the lid to the feeder and pull up on the bottle to release the nectar into the base.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I'm new to Top Fill feeders, are there tips on filling for beginners?

A: Yes, follow the steps below.

Q: What criteria should I use when selecting a hummingbird feeder?

A: Make sure it is one that will be easy to clean and fill, especially since you will need to clean the feeder every few days. If you are worried about bees and wasps or ants invading the feeder, purchase a hummingbird feeder with bee guards, such as the Perky-Pet® model #203CP or ant guards, Perky-Pet® model #242.

Q: How do I clean my hummingbird feeders?

A: Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Use hot water and a bottle brush, along with mild soap; be sure to rinse thoroughly. The Perky-Pet® cleaning mop is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning hummingbird feeders, and is very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used on seed feeders and oriole feeders for those small, tight spaces that are difficult to reach.

Q: What is the importance of providing water for hummingbirds?

A: Hummingbirds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need nectar. Hummingbirds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide hummingbirds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for hummingbirds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy.
