One reviewer said their bee guard center hole was closed and ordered a new set through customer service. I think the center grid hole is meant to be closed because my original 8 oz glass Cinch Waist Perky Pet feeder came with all 4 bee guard center grid holes closed. The hummies don't have a problem with sipping around the closed center grid holes and many hummie varieties perch and sip all day long. Personally, I like the closed center hole because the less port area there is for bees to access, the better. Along with the Perky Pet AntGuard (the bees don't seem to like the AntGuard - fumes maybe?) I haven't had any swarm problems and the hummies perch and sip in peace now. Hope this info is helpful to someone.

Be sure to check that the middle hole is open. The pack that I bought had solid center holes and couldn't be punched out. The company was very nice and is sending me new ones; said it must have been a bad batch that went out.
