Live Animal Trapping
How to Bait

Havahart® X-Large 1-Door Traps are constructed of sturdy rust-resistant wire mesh with steel reinforcements for long life and are galvanized for maximum resistance to rust and corrosion. Mesh openings are smaller than competing traps of comparable size to prevent escapes and stolen bait. Spring loaded doors and sensitive triggers ensure quick, secure captures that target the specific animal size, eliminating undesired catches.

Solid doors and handle guards protect users during transportation, while smoothed internal edges protect and prevent injuries to animals. These large raccoon traps are made in the U.S.A.

  great trap
Reviewer:

I order it on Monday and arrived Thurs, set the trap on Fri. I used vanilla wafers and marshmallow. Sat morning I checked there was a big raccoon. Released it by the creek several miles away from home. Didn't catch again until Wed another raccoon. It's worth the money, works great. Thank you so much for a great product!!!

My BBQ brings all the coons to the yard!
Reviewer:

First 5 nights 5 racoons. Large monsters. Caught a cat too released it. Putting my left over BBQ scraps and they lovin it. Trap is well made and the peace it gave to my household is definitley worth the cost. Released them in the woods with a full belly. Although i wanted them gone, Long Island cant kill em legaly. Dont know if i had the <3 to do it even if it was legal. Thank you and enjoy catching them critters.¿~_*•

  Got that SLY ole FOX!!
Reviewer:

After months of dealing with an el-cheap-o trap...and lots of stolen bait...I bought this trap. It arrived on a Wednesday night, so I put it right out. Thursday morning, I heard an odd sound coming from my back yard. To my surprise, I caught a fox!!! YAY!! One less predator to go after my chickens!!

  Perfect
Reviewer:

Bought this trap last week. Have a raccoon destroying all my bird feeders. It came yesterday, set it up last night and got the raccoon first night. He was a cute little guy. Not really afraid of us. Took him to the river where he can fish and have fun. Thanks for the quick service and for having a great product.

  awesome product
Reviewer:

This trap is awesome. We have caught 3 racoons within the past couple of weeks. All were living under our deck. We have now moved on to chipmunks with the smaller trap which is also awesome.

Reviewer:

I'm well pleased with the trap. The company fixed the problem with the trap by sending me a new one. I was very surprise and am very thankful. I don't know many companies that will do that to make a customer happy. Thanks Havahart and Woodstream!!!!

  Great trap
Reviewer:

Bought this trap after lunch one day and before dinner had trapped my problem raccoon. Great trap...very easy to use

  Good Trap
Reviewer:

Within 12 hours of getting my 1081 trap I caught a raccoon. Another the next night. Maybe some of my chickens will survive. It seems well built. I would recomend this to a friend.

  Works Great!
Reviewer:

have caught 4 raccoons over the last 2 weeks with this trap. Easy to set and it works.

  Made in the USA
Reviewer:

Purchased a similar sized trap from a catalog to trap a large raccoon-it was made in china. Racoon was trapped in it, but clawed his way out. The guage of wire on the trap door was thinner than that on the rest of the trap, and he clawed his way out through the trap door. The havahart trap I purchased, exact same size, was made in the USA and was of better quality. The raccoon was trapped in it for several hours and could not escape. Animal control came and took it away. No more dug up garden or rabies danger to the kids around here.

  Great trap

Received the cage this afternoon, baited it, and caught the pesky groundhog from under our house with an hour. Moved him to a new location. We couldn't be happier with our new cage.

Strong, heavy, easy to use and very effective for groundhogs
Reviewer:

As a super serious gardener I had to either give up gardening or get serious about trapping the many groundhogs living under my *!#!! neighbors deck. It was so frustrating to watch them mow plants down, especially since they love dewy fresh new flower buds! I haven't seen some of my flower bloom in four years.
Ok, so I bought the usual havahart and getting them to go in that smaller cage that is only slightly larger than they are is tricky, especially if you can't place the cage in front of their burrow I used watermelon and cantalope and had reasonable success catching the babies. However the big mama groundhogs were skeptical.
I got this cage and was concerned about the size - it is really big. It looks like I'm trying to trap bear cubs or a coyote. However, I caught both senior groundhogs the next day! I set it with watermelon and covered the top with twigs and brush and I could see it looked so wide open and inviting and SNAP, shazamm and scoot them off to the park.
A few things to consider:
Groundhogs come out early morning and dusk. Be sure to open the trap early morning unless you want to haul away a skunk.
Keep hands clear! They will rampage the cage and they have killer claws and teeth. I liked that the door on this cage was so big that when they left, they took off like a rocket into the woods.
The handle is unacceptable. It came off several time, really was quite useless. However, I usually use some wire as backup for pulling open the door from behind and getting a better handle on the cage.
With the groundhog in the trap, it was heavy. You might need help.
Also, I have a big ole Chryler and could not fit the cage in my trunk.
No problemo for an SUV.
The cage is not collapsible but if you have a problem with animals, it is cheaper than paying someone $75 per animal...and you can guarantee its removed far enough away that it does not return back to your home.
If you have groundhogs, don't ignore the problem. My neighbor did and in spring, she had six babies. They spread out across the neighborhood and now everyone if trying to keep them from under their sheds and decks. They dig several long tunnels with escape hatches so it is worthwhile to get rid of them fast, seal the tunnels with wire fencing and check and recheck that they have not returned via their backdoor tunnel. Good Luck!

  Spectacular and Efficient
Reviewer:

My trap was delivered by FedEx less than 48 hours after I ordered it. It arrived in perfect working order. I used Google to determine that marshmallows would be my preferred bait. No smell with marshmallows and no residue.
Set the trap mid afternoon. Next morning had my first racoon. Set the trap again the second night and next morning had no bait or animals. Set and baited the trap for the third night and caught a neighborhood cat. The cat left my bait as it fled so I reset the trap for the fourth night. Next morning, the bait had been stolen without springing the trap. It seems obvious that a large racoon can enter the trap and steal the bait without stepping in the trigger. For the fifth night, I baited the trap with three marshmallows, using a long dowel to position the marshmallows against the rear of the trap. One marshmallow in each rear corner, and one positioned in the center at the rear of the trap. This morning I have a very large and unhappy coon awaiting animal control.
Rightly or wrongly, I have decided that the key to sucess is the positioning of the bait so as to encourage the racoon to move around in the rear of the trap. I believe that a large coon can retrieve the bait without stepping on the trigger if the bait is not positioned against the rear of the trap.
Great trap, quality design and construction. Biggest problem is how to get rid of the angry racoon on weekends and holidays when animal contol isn't available.[...]
[...]
In eighty (80) days I have captured a total of twenty-four (24) coons. Neither of my Havahart traps have suffered any damage and operate as well today as they did when first removed from the packing box.
I do not trap on Friday or Saturday night because 'animal control' is not available to do pickup on Saturday o Sunday.
BAIT** I use Kraft Marshmallows as bait. Marshmallows do not attract the neighborhood cats as does cat and dog food. I am generous with my bait. Typically I pitch five (5) marshmallows to the end of the trap beyond the trigger plate.
Recently, on one night, I caught three raccoons in my two traps on a single night. Two young coons were caught in the 1079 and one in the 1081.

  Very good trap

Will easily trap anything up to a small dog.

  Havahart Trap
Reviewer:

Great product came completely assembled ready to use. Had a family of 6 racoons living under my deck and was able to trap them all in a matter of 7 days catching two small ones at the same time. I was able to remove them safely thanks to the metal shield that covered the handle that prevented the racoons from either biting or scratching me. Easy to bait and set, even caught the neighbors cat one night although he was released safely and went right home. Sure beats spending $500.00 to $600.00 dollars to have a professional come and set the same trap only to have me call him when it goes off so he could come and take the animal to the woods. Again great highly effective product which included instructions on which baits to use to catch different animals.*****stars

The live trap was as discribed, and arrived very quickly. It is easy to set up and has a very light triggering device. I was using it to catch a large possum that was raiding my duck house and getting the eggs. I used an egg for bait the first time, and I caught a duck that laid another egg in the trap LOL??? Anyway it worked the second set, no more egg eating possum.

I live on the water and have 3 trap That work great. However lately the raccoons are getting the food out but the traps are not closing. I have tried WD 40 on all moving parts but still they are getting food and that's it. Any suggestions?

  RESPONSE FROM HAVAHART

NOVEMBER 28, 2012

Dear Andrea,

Thank you for your review! We are happy to hear about the success you have had using the Havahart® X-Large 1-Door Trap (model 1081). To determine if there is an issue with the trapping mechanisms, set the trap and apply pressure to the bait plate. Does it seem to take a great deal of force to release the doors? If yes, please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) so we can help you.

If the trap doors are releasing for you without a problem then it may just take a change in bait placement to be successful. Try tying the bait to the far closed end of the trap. Please be sure to contact us for further tips and tricks, or visit our Learning Center.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Best Regards,

  What the?

Maybe I have the smartest raccoon in the world but he keeps eating the bait, tripping the door, and still not in the cage. What gives?

  RESPONSE FROM HAVAHART

JUNE 09, 2011

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Havahart® Large One Door Raccoon Trap (model #1081).  As you have described, at times larger raccoons or animals may have the ability to reach inside with their hind quarters partially outside of the trap, allowing them to back out stealing bait without being trapped.  Also, the raccoon might be reaching the bait from outside the trap, therefore stealing it and setting off the pedal but alluding being caught.  Try moving the bait further back into the trap where the mesh is at it's smallest (1/2 spacing) or try hanging  the bait above the bait tray in a small pvc pipe.  Both of these methods would require the raccoon's body to be completely enclosed inside when the trap is set off.

We hope you have found this tip to be helpful.  If you have questions or need assistance please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at the following:
