  Wow! Easy Set

My yard has been overrun by nuisance squirrels for years, digging up my garden, and emptying my bird feeder. After trying almost everything imaginable to deter them, I finally decided trapping and relocating them was the best solution. At the end of August, I purchased two, one-door, EZ Set traps. Baited with sunflower seeds, they work great! Easy to use -- easy to release the trapped animal. In ten days I have caught 46 squirrels and 5 rats. Way to go EZ Set!

I've had this trap for 5 years for squirrels. It sits on a bannister 20ft off the ground. It has been mauled by bears, raccoons and falls from its perch and with a bit of innovation always restored to function. It does what you say it will do and is virtually indestructible ...thanks.

Can't believe how easy this is!

Squirrels in our yard have defeated the heretofore squirrel-proof bird feeders and, worse, have, for the first time in ten years, started urinating and defecating on the railings of our decks where we also feed birds. I didn't want to kill them, so I ordered the small Easy Set trap. I put a little margarine container with sunflower seeds (as in the feeders) in it and left it under the tree with the feeder for two days. Nothing. I then just put about half a cup of seed directly on the ground and just placed the set trap on top of it. In three hours today I've caught four of them so far, transporting each in turn to a woods about three miles away. At this rate the yard will be squirrel free in a couple of days tops!

OCTOBER 06, 2012

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your review! We are glad to hear that the Havahart® Small Easy Set® Trap (model 1083) has been working so well to help rid your yard of the pesky squirrels.

While there are many different baits that you can try for animals, as you have found, the best bait is often what has attracted them to your yard in the first place. We hope that your yard will be squirrel free soon.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).

Trap 'em & move 'em - No need for killing

Havahart is very widely used by those who need to "remove" or to "bring home" animals that are not where they belong. I once worked in an animal-control-related field in which killing or otherwise harming the animals was not an option. We used Havahart traps with complete satisfaction. When an animal "issue" arose in my personal life, I used this item with the same complete satisfaction. Totally recommended. Do be sure to use the approriate size for the animal(s) in question.

  To Catch a Squirrel

Last year I paid a lot of money to have an animal trapper remove squirrels from the attic, and to have the holes patched where they came in. Guess what...they came RIGHT BACK. According to the trapper, the scent of squirrel will draw them back. Now that its getting colder and wetter, my attic is starting to look inviting to the squirrels again. So, I got this HAVAHART Cage trap. Its so easy to use. You just pull the handle back, then bait it. I throw peanuts IN THE SHELL around the outside of the trap, and inside. Then, I check the trap at least once a day. Sometimes a squirrel will bang themselves against the side of the cage, until they are nearly dead. If you have a squirrel, you wont have to worry about its rodent teeth biting your fingers off, cos there is a thick steel plate, between the carry handle, and the cage. I still wear gloves, tho. In fact, if your attic has as much squirrel "dirt" as mine has in it, you'll maybe want to wear a resperator over your face too.

Take the trapped squirrel inside the cage, put it in the car, and release it a few miles away. The other side of a river, or large highway, keeps them from finding their way back to your house. It's illegal to trap and kill without a licence, in most municipalities. After you have a baited trap without any action for more than a week, you can stop trapping. If you hear squirrels again in your attic, you just have to bait and trap again. You wont have to worry about hurting the squirrel with the trap's gate, cos it wont snap shut, unless the target animal is stepping on the trigger plate, well inside the trap. Good Hunting!

Works Great Just Like The Smaller Traps

This trap works just as well as the smaller squirrel/chipmunk sized Havahart trap I own. I caught a bunny with this one. Hopefully there is only one in my yard leaving bunny marbles all over the place. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with a bunny, or marbles, but my dog insists on flopping on her back and rolling around in the marbles (gross). I relocated this bunny to the same place I have relocated 15 chipmunks this year. I'm sure they are very happy there...much happier than they were living in my yard.

Havahart traps are extremely easy to set up, and they are also very durable. My chipmunk trap is in it's 6th year of use, and has captured 46 chipmunks. Pretty awesome. That's like $.50 a chipmunk.

I have nothing against animals living in my yard, but they need to be controlled or they get out of hand, tunneling under the driveway and sidewalks, eating our garden, etc. These traps help you do that in a more humane way than just blasting them with a pellet gun or worse, trying to poison them (don't do that).

Easy to set trap won't disappoint

These Havahart traps are great. This one is a new design that makes it even easier to set than the older ones. No more trying to lightly wedge the curved trigger bar into the slot on the trip pallet. This one comes with a sliding handle that makes it super easy and when it has been triggered, it is locked down good. No escape. I was able to trap a squirrel the first night it was out. Hopefully he doesn't find his way back after setting him free at a neighboring lake. I couldn't be more happy with it.

Highly recommended.

Designed for catch and release, rather than for harming animals, this item has thus far caught ground squirrels, rabbits and moles that have plagued our property. Setting the light (4 pounds) trap is easy and the included directions are particularly helpful, including suggested bait for each creature. It has an efficiently designed carrying handle with a hand guard to prevent direct contact with the trapped animals. There is more than adequate room for setting out bait, whatever its type. Easy to transport, the cage trap will secure any small animal due to its spring loaded lockable opening that prevents escape. Nicely done!

  Lightweight -- well-made -- Easy to set

Living out in the country, we have a lot of damage from the ground squirrels (we have a tree nursery). My husband seeks various ways to trap them - along with other small destructive critters.

The trap is so sensitive, our first capture was a Scrub Jay bird.

Even with peanut butter, we've yet to capture a ground squirrel... the word must have gotten out!

But we are confident that it's not the trap's fault. It is well-made, easy and safe to set, and clearly -- sensitive enough to trap a hungry bird! Easy to lift, to carry, and to store.

Our day with the squirrel will come!

  Another Great Product From Havahart

As a real estate investor I have had a long history with Havahart products in houses where trees have been allowed to grow too close to the roof.

I recall one time when we just purchased a house, much of the roof overhang had been attacked and squirrels had invaded the attic. We had two medium traps, the old type with a mid-tray and two doors. Using cracked walnuts we captured 22 squirrels that week and five more the next. Neighbors were high-fiveing us. Of course your results my vary.

Later, we got the bigger one for a raccoon family, all with great success.

Warning.... some cities don't allow dumping of live critters in city parks. Many can't make it without stored food and family associations. Even when they make it, overpopulation can result. Check with city hall.

So... now we come to the Model 1083. Havahart has a winner here, both in setting the trap and critter release later. Obviously, at the time of release, the animal is very excited, and there was some danger in release. The technique I used was to have the trap off the ground a little, leaving the critter a little unstable on his feet. The trap was released close to a tree which allowed the animal an avenue of safe escape.

The new 1083 keeps hands fully away from the trapped animal and is hugely easier to set. Pull the handle back, and your done. I rate this product 5-Star, a rarity in my reviews.

One suggestion: The bait is set on the far side of the trap and the critter steps on the trigger plate on his way to the bait. I might suggest a little vertical tray so the bait could not be stolen by small birds attacking it from the outside. Further, your bait would not fall through the bottom of the trap when you picked it up.

But.... a minor issue; very good engineering... truly, a "Better Trap". The insert with the trap suggests techniques and bait for most every critter.

this trap is awesome!! i have already caught seven squirrels with it. it is extremely easy to set. the easiest trap i have ever used!! i also have two other sizes and this one is by far the easiest by far to set and release. thanks

  Very Easy to Set

Compared to my other, much larger, Havahart 1081 Live Animal Professional Style One-Door Large Raccoon, Small Dogs, and Fox Cage Trapthis small 1083 is a breeze to operate. Setting is as easy as lifting the handle on top. On top of that, it is sturdy and quite secure. The first critter I trapped was a young skunk. There was no chance of it escaping. Thanks to my experience with the 1081 I have become a master skunk releaser. And releasing animals is a easy as setting the trap.

But back to the 1083 and it's one slight drawback. Because it is so small, the average garden ravaging wild critter will have to be sorely tempted before entering this little trap. Bait it with whatever is most desirable to the creatures one needs to relocate or one will be disappointed when the trap remains empty.

All in all, a great trap.

The safest, easiest to use product I can imagine

If you have trouble with a squirrel, a bunny, or a raccoon and you want to catch and release, this is the product you need.

I was expecting some assembly. None required.

Then, I worried about getting my hand caught while baiting the trap. No trouble whatsoever.

When I caught the raccoon that had been dumping my trash for three months, I thought it might try to claw or bite me. The handle is on top of a large metal plate that kept the varmint at bay. (I wore some leather gloves anyway.)

I just put some paper down in the trunk, loaded up the trap, and drove to the park ten minutes away.

Easy. Easy. Easy.

Thank you for this humane and simple to use trap!

  small easy set trap

1 week of trap ownership, 11 chipmunks, 3 squirrels, lots of car trips and gas - maybe I should just move. Trap is excellent.

  Excellent product

This product works as represented.  I'm the type that guarantees to screw up home improvement, especially when the Home Depot salesman says, "Oh, it's easy. Anyone can do it."   With this trap I caught and relocated a rabbit the first day I used it. Thanks, Havahart.

  Works like a charm!

Wow, this trap really works--even better than I expected. The reviews and comments were helpful, too. So far, we've caught and released 10 squirrels in only 8 days. Just a couple more to go and we get our garden and bird feeder back! :) Product delivery was fast, and everything arrived in working order.

For squirrels at least, use peanut butter as bait. Stick it so that most of the butter is underneath the far end of the trap/catch plate. That way the squirrel will get all the way into the trap, and will stand on the trap plate to access more peanut butter.

YOU MUST SMEAR THE PEANUT BUTTER ONTO AND UNDER THE TRIGGER PLATE. If you only put a gob of it on top of the plate, the squirrel will easily scoop it up and exit the trap chortling over its new-found treasure, whilst you write nasty reviews about how this trap doesn't work. Smear the peanut butter on so that it is firmly connected to the trigger plate, with about only 20% of the peanut butter on the top of the plate, and the rest firmly anchored on the underside of the plate.

Put a brick on top of the back end of the trap. The animals don't even notice it, but a full grown squirrel can really bang around while trying to get out, and the brick keeps it from rolling the trap over and possibly escaping.

To transport the caged squirrel, I've found that putting the cage into a large black plastic trash bag immediately calms the squirrel down. Of course, don't leave any animal in a plastic bag for any length of time or it will suffocate, which would defeat the whole purpose of using the Havahart trap in the first place. But a few minutes of darkness while you are moving the cage and transporting the animal in your car will go a long way to keep both you and the squirrel calm. When you are ready to release the animal, completely remove the cage from the bag first, so the animal can see all around, and then set the cage on the ground with the door pointed away from you and open the cage door.

Apparently squirrels can find their way back to your yard, so make sure you take them several miles away before releasing them. Preferably transport them to a location that would force them to cross major highways or commercial zones to return. Look for a park-like area with trees and likely food and water sources. If they can live well in their new location, they won't make a hazardous journey back to visit you.

  Love the Easy Set!!

I LOVE the easy set trap! My friend loaned me her old Havahart trap to trap squirrels & it works but it's difficult to set & release. I got the Easy Set one & it's fantastic! Told my Ace Hardware about the Easy Set & they want to order some to sell! :)

I have used the older Havahart traps, and really didn't like how close I had to get to the trapped animal to release it.

The Easy Set is so easy! I almost didn't think it would work - because it was so easy. I have trapped 2 squirrels in 3 nights with a bait of peanut butter, oat-meal, and Cheetos(tm). It is like squirrel crack.

We received this trap yesterday, set it outside last night and caught the rat! We didn't even bait the trap. We fooled around with it, figuring out how it worked and left it set and caught the rat by accident. After doing a little research about Havahart traps, we decided on the single door because, according to the reviews, this seemed the most efficient. It is very easy to use and, evidently, very effective! We easily carried the "victim" to a wooded area and let it go. Use caution when picking the trap up by the handle. I almost grabbed the wrong handle. One handle is for carrying and one handle opens the door. This was a good size for the rat and will be good for the squirrels that need to be re-located.

  rid of squirrels

I have caught 5 squirrels in 2-3 weeks with peanut butter...easy to operate trap...highly recommended

Score Me 9 - Squirrels ZERO!

I searched for how to trap squirrels and ended up buying this product and I couldn't be happier. It took a little trial and error to find out what bait to use. The first few I caught using peanut butter on bread, but that became a problem because it would also attract ants. Once or twice I'd find the trap still set but all the bait gone. I watched some YouTube videos and got some more hints and tips. Went down to Kroger and bought a big bag of unsalted peanuts in the shell and THAT is the only thing to use IMHO. I make sure to place several at the back of the cage beyond the trigger and a few more in the front part and one or two outside. They made off with all of them once and I got concerned that the squirrels were too lightweight to trigger the trap, but I'd rebait and catch again. I've caught and relocated eight with number nine visible. I caught one Sunday, and two today. Can you say "infested"? I knew you could!

Bottom line, if you want a fool proof trap, this is the one to buy! Thank you Havahart!

I received my model 1083 a few weeks ago and was able to
set in area at the base of our Macadamia Nut tree a few days ago and lo and behold our pesky squirrel finally decided to take up residence yesterday, and we were able to reestablish his residence to a park. The unit is so well designed it was of no danger of injury to the animal or
danger to either of in transport. My only down side comment would be is to have the wire used in the cage to be galvanized, or coated with a rust resistance material. In the four day use having it sit on the ground on on one of the flagstones the wire on the bottom showed rusting. I'm
now looking forward to changing the residence of his/her mate. For anyone with either my situation or similar, this
is the way to go. PR

  Havahart Small Squirrel/Chipmunk Trap

It took 2 days to catch a Squirel but it worked like a champ. I used pecans for bait and my grandson called to tell me we had caught a squirrel, he was so excited. He just wanted to catch one to get a close look at, he is 10 years old. We will release it back into the wild/ Bottom line this trap works and was very easy to set. A very good product, I suspect it will also catch wharf rats as well.

  1083 Easy Set

I've bumped my rating up to a 4 since catching two squirrels and one oppossum. Before I had watched squirrels and birds go in and out of the trap taking the bait. I looked for a method of increasing the sensitivity of the plate-trip mechanism and found that if I used a wood shim and wedged it "just so" under the set handle, the trap might work...and it did. BTW, the oppossum found the trap to be a nice home and didn't particularly want to leave when released or maybe he was just playing possum....

  Good quality, bad design

The quality of the trap is good but there are a few design flaws that became apparent after about a month with no success. I bought this trap to catch a chipmunk that has been living in our basement.
I've set this trap up in several places but for the last few weeks its been sitting just outside our basement's external entrance.
At first I was finding the bait gone and the trap untripped so I placed a flat piece of steel on the trigger pedal to make it more sensitive.
Now I was finding the trap tripped, no animal inside it, and the bait either half eaten or gone. A couple of times the trap was laying on its side a couple feet away from where I set it up (One time looking like it went through a war, the trigger assembly practically ripped out).
I tried all the different baits again, in the same spot, only this time I surrounded the cage on 3 sides with cinder blocks and placed a 4th one over the top back half. Same results (with the cage being pulled out of its cinder block sanctuary once.
I have used peanut butter, peanuts, crackers, tortilla chips, melted marshmallow, fresh apple slices, dry cat food (i have seen the chipmunk taking it from our cats dish), and pistachios.
I have tried placing the bait on the trigger, under the trigger, behind the trigger, all under the trap, and even in a plastic ramekin behind the trigger plate. In frustration I have even grabbed a large handful of a cat food, peanut, & pistachio medly and dumped it onto the cage so that it was in all the aforementioned spots all at once!
There are times when I look out the window and see the chipmunk standing near the trap just looking at it. A couple of times, after staring the trap down, he would run around the house to the porch on the other side and look for food there.
I still have a few ideas left to try (such as super gluing some sunflower seeds to the trigger plate) before I use the half full bucket of water and sunflower seed trap (extremely effective but lethal)
Design flaws (just my opinion) seem to be: 1) the fencing behind the trigger plate instead of a solid wall. This combined with the 2) limited room there make it easy for critters to reach through the cage and grab the bait w/o going into the trap. 3) A non adjustable trigger plate gives the sensitivity a very limited range. 4) There needs to be a way of securing the trap to something solid. 5) This last one is purely speculation) the locking option may need to be more secure. A couple of times it appears that I had caught something and it just "banged" around until it was free.
I am not a professional trapper. My review is from the perspective of a novice so take into consideration that i may have overlooked something vital in the process.

Thank you for your detailed review of the NEW! Havahart® Small Easy Set® Trap (model 1083). These comments have been shared with our Product Development Team. We are sorry to hear that you have yet to catch this pesky chipmunk. This particular trap is recommended for rabbits, skunks, squirrels and mink. To catch chipmunks, we recommend one of our Havahart® XSmall 2-Door Easy Set® Trap (model 1061) which has smaller openings on the sides of the traps to help prevent these tiny creatures from escaping.

We would be happy to provide additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).

  door closes on its own

My friend and I have been using this trap, but the door seems to close on its own often. We're also concerned that door may close on a kitten (we're doing cat trapping). My friend taped a small stone to the mechanism that you pull back on the top to help wt. it down. Any other suggestions?

SEPTEMBER 03, 2011

Thank you for your online review.  The Havahart® Easy Set® Small Rabbit & Squirrel Trap (model 1083) is best used for trapping small rabbits, skunks, squirrels and mink.  Unfortunately it would not be the size trap recommended for cats.  For cats you will have better results using the Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kit (model 1099).  A larger trap like the 1099 will require a little more effort to be set off by a kitten ensuring the kitten will be fully enclosed inside the trap when the trap doors close.

We hope you have found this information to be helpful!  If you have questions our Consumer Relations Team is available at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) to assist you.

  poor producty

This model is no good for squirrels. They are not heavy enough to trigger the trap. They just take the bait and leave.

JUNE 07, 2013

Thank you for your online review. We appreciate your feedback regarding the NEW! Havahart® Small Easy Set® Trap (model 1083) and are sorry to hear that you have not yet seen the desired results from this trap.

If the squirrels have been able to take the bait and are not being trapped, you may want to place something small such as a washer or a pebble on the trip plate. This will increase the sensitivity of the trap. You may also want to hang the bait from the roof of the trap above the trigger plate, which forces the animal to stand directly on the trigger plate and will increase your catch rate.

We hope this information his helpful, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).

  too small

The small trap is in fact small, too small for squirrels. If on soft dirt they go under it trying, and often succeeding, to get the bait. If they do go in the door does not have the strength to contain them. The medium size trap works OK for squirrels.

Havahart Consumer Relations Team

MAY 16, 2012

Dear Greg,

Thank you for your review, your feedback is appreciated. The Havahart® Small Easy Set® Trap (model 1083) has been rigorously tested in the field to be effective in trapping squirrels as well as small rabbits and skunks. Sometimes the weight of an animal and positioning of the bait can affect the trap’s effectiveness. There are a few tricks you can use to prevent bait from being stolen from your trap. For example, try putting the bait inside a piece of PVC piping. Tie the pipe to the roof of the trap so that it's hanging above the bait pan. With this, the animal will then have to maneuver over the pan to eat the bait, ensure it engages and actuates the trap.

We would like to learn more about your experience. Please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) so we can assist you.
