Sun & Star Lantern Feeder - FAQs
Q: How much seed should I put inside the Sun & Star?
A: When you first hang your feeder, the wild birds in your neighborhood may not notice at first. With that in mind, don't fill it to the brim right away, since it may take time for your birds to find the feeder. Instead, start fill the Sun & Star about one-quarter full. Once that empties out, try adding more and more as your visitor numbers increase. This is the ideal way to keep your seed fresh -- remember to only put out the seeds the birds will consume!
Q: A squirrel is gorging itself at my Sun & Star Lantern Feeder. How can I fight back?
A: Like many feeders, squirrels will eagerly eat off the tray of the Sun & Star, but there are ways to keep squirrels away. First, try a squirrel baffle, which will stop the furry bandits from reaching your feeder. They will reach the baffle, but slide off and be unable to reach the seed tray. You can also try squirrel repellent spray or removing the squirrel from your property. Third, try mixing the bird seed with capsicum powder before placing it in your feeder. This hot-flavored pepper doesn't bother birds, but squirrels don't like it. Q: How often should I clean the Sun & Star bird feeder?
A: The biggest problem bird seed can have is mold. To keep mold from forming in old seed, clean your feeder about every two weeks. The Sun & Lantern feeder tray has drainage holes to let moisture escape, which can help fight mold.
Q: How do I clean the Sun & Star Lantern bird feeder?
A: Cleaning the Sun & Star Lantern bird feeder takes only a few minutes:
Remove any remaining seed and seed hulls.
Soak the Sun & Star in a light bleach water solution, The mixture should be about 9 parts water to 1 part bleach.

Big enough for the Big Birds - Be Mindful Of Your PlacementI have been looking for something that I can give to the big birds without attracting other creatures of the 4 legged variety.
This feeder is sturdy and weighted perfectly- when hanging (but heavier birds can set it swinging feverishly. I hung mine from underneath the deck where we have a window and can watch but the first morning I woke up to two deer, heads up, practically gulping the bird seed. So I had to raise it and place more towards the outer part of the deck, just out of reach.
Once i found the "Sweet spot" too hard for squirrels and too high for deer, the big birds arrived in a frenzy. For the first time we attracted the "Blues" Jays, Bluebirds and Magpie. It is a treat to watch. The Rustic Star and Sun just look great and feel like you have a piece of country.
If I could change anything I would change the ledge in such a way that would allow the birds to land on the feeder without such spillage. But I have to leave that solution to the engineers.

Great Feeder for my Backyard BirdsI purchased this feeder to add to my smaller feeders in my backyard. The larger birds were having trouble standing on the smaller feeders. This one did the trick. No regrets on this purchase.

Looks good but doesn't work t so good ...The product looks good and is well made and the price was good but……when you fill it with seed the seed goes everywhere. I don't know what kind of seed this product is meant to hold but I used it for sunflower seed and it just goes everywhere. I have decided that bird feeders need small seed distribution outlets. The ones on here are large - I think I could put peanuts in it . I also think that feeders with the perch bars are better as the larger birds have a hard time landing on this one as the base does not extend out very far. I was thinking maybe I could glue a large plate of some sort to the bottom to help the seed loss and make it easier for the birds to sit and eat. Am I using it for the wrong kind of seed ? Other than peanuts I don't know what might stay in it a little better.

love to watch birdsI originally bought two of these and two others. The birds continually gravitated to these two. This particular feeder stays drier than most unless we have a long downpour. Little bit of a pain to fill because you have to take down to unscrew the top off to refill, but my birds are happy! ! By the way I now have all four the same! !

Not so goodThe bolt that holds the feeder "roof" is not long enough. The feeder has fallen twice because of this although I've tried to fasten it as tightly as I can. Finally added a piece of wire so hang the feeder so I wouldn't have to unscrew the "roof."

Had it for yearsThis is a nice feeder that I have had for several years. It holds a nice amount of black oil sunflower seed. My only complaint is that the seed get's tossed out on the ground by the blue jays and I have to refill it every other day or sometimes every day.
