Ideally a sheltered southeastern exposure location is best for hanging bird feeders since birds like to feed in the sun and out of the wind. Birds also prefer not to have any obstructions over their feeding area so they can see any predators. More»

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What are the most popular bird seeds to use?
A. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.
Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Thistle Seed is imported from Africa and Asia. Thistle won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.
Q. How do I clean my bird feeders?
A. Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
Remove all old seed.
Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.
Q. What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?
A. Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!

Just as good as expectedI helped a friend purchase this feeder to replace a feeder just like it that she had had for 30 years. Finally the cover cracked and the seed got wet causing a Carolina wren to come to the window scolding. She was unable to find another like it locally and didn't have computer access, so together we found this one on line and ordered it. It shipped quickly and arrived in perfect condition. It was everything it was expected to be and looks beautiful. My friend and her birds couldn't be happier.

Would NOT recommendBarely two months after purchase, the screw holding the unit together came apart and the birdfeeder collapsed to the ground and broke into several pieces. Found all 4 pieces of the hook and bolt mechanism spread across the ground. Obviously poor quality / workmanship of product!

Attractive feeder but not squirrel-proofThe pros to this feeder is that it is used by a wide variety of birds, can hold a ton of seed, and is easy to clean. The major con is that the squirrels can still drop onto the seed trays by sliding down the baffle. The baffle should be much larger to prevent this. And since the squirrels have made their way to the feeder they have chewed-out 4 of the flip ports and I cannot fill seed above these ports as the seed pours out as nothing is holding it back. I wonder if Perky Pet provides replacement flip ports. I have now prevented the squirrels from using the feeder by placing a much larger baffle above it.

Amazon ReviewHigh quality, a very nice looking feeder and holds a lot of seed. I also like the way you can change the feeder ports to allow use of smaller seed than the large sunflower seed, this keeps the larger birds from eating the more expensive smaller seed.

Amazon Review, Great birdfeederThe feeder looks very nice in my garden. The birds love it and the squirrels try so hard to get to it, but can't with the baffle below it.

Amazon Review, Great multi-food feederI bought this to replace a similar, older style version of this feeder and this one is an improvement. It is less fragile and holds more food. The top is also bigger providing better rain protection. My birdies are so happy they are eating me out of house and home! Some complain it is misleading that it is not really copper but I did not expect it to be with this price.

Amazon ReviewThe first one got knocked over during a really bad wind storm after we had it for many years. I had actually painted the hood on it after a number of years red because it had started to fade a bit. It lasted a really long time. It's plastic (the hood) so it wont last forever but the birds absolutely love it and it holds so much food for them so I don't have to fill it nearly as often as so many other bird feeders. I love this bird feeder and would highly recommend it. I can't find it anywhere except online. I think the first one we got lasted about 6-7 years if I recall correctly. Not bad considering the Texas heat beating down on that hood every single day.
