Perky-Pet® Premium 23" Heavy-Duty Tube Feeder with Hunter Green Finish

Bird Watching at its Best

101A Ports

Built to last, this nearly indestructible Perky-Pet® Premium 23" Heavy-Duty Tube Feeder with Hunter Green Finish provides years of bird-watching enjoyment. It's designed and constructed to withstand the toughest elements. The weather-resistant feeder's transparent polycarbonate seed tube is strong and contains a UV inhibitor to prevent yellowing, while its powder-coated die-cast zinc ports, cap, and base offer protection against squirrel damage.

Lifetime Warranty

This Premium feeder with Perky-Pet® Lifetime Limited Warranty comes equipped with four patented rotating ports that can be easily turned and set to dispense either thistle seed or mixed seed. Even more, each port provides an offset, bird-preferred, U-shaped perch, which allows birds to dine comfortably and encourages return visits. Best of all, it offers a 360-degree view, so you can delight in watching your bird visitors from any angle. This Premium feeder attracts chickadees, finches, juncos, kinglets, and nuthatches to redpolls, siskins, sparrows, titmice, woodpeckers, and wrens.

Easy to Fill and Use

This Premium 23-inch heavy-duty tube feeder holds up to 1.8 pounds of black oil sunflower seed, peanut chunks, thistle seed, safflower, or mixed seed. Once filled, hang the feeder then watch as a variety of feathered friends fly in to feast from 6 feeding ports.

Suggested Placement

Fitted with a sturdy stainless-steel hanging wire, this feeder can be securely hung near a back deck, porch, patio in your yard. It can also be pole mounted. Choose a location that not only provides a great view, but that is also bird friendly. Birds prefer an open space, so they can easily move from one feeding port to the next. They also like to be in a location that gets both sun and partial shade during the day. An ideal location will be between 5 and 8 feet off the ground and within 15 feet of nearby coverage, like bushes and shrubs, so birds feel safe and protected from predators.

Cleaning the Feeder

Keep this bird feeder clean and filled with fresh seed or feed to ensure return visits. Perky-Pet recommends checking this bird feeder once a week for insects or mold and cleaning it at least every two weeks with a mild soap and water solution.

Elegant Design

This Perky-Pet® Premium heavy-duty tube feeder offers sleek, sophisticated elegance and comes in a variety of stylish finishes, including Antique Copper, Midnight Black, and Hunter Green. A thoughtful gift idea for the bird lover on your list, the Premium feeder makes a charming addition to any garden, backyard or patio.

We lived in an apartment the past year, and were very happy to have a backyard again! I wanted a bird feeder because I've always thought it was cool to see what is local to you and what you can attract! I put this in my backyard and so far, the squirrels haven't gotten into it, it looks great, and the birds are flocking. It seems to be very well made - nothing is poking out or falling off, rusting, or showing wear (though it hasn't been long). It is bigger than a lot of the other feeders I've seen, so it holds more seed and I don't have to fill it nearly as often as I thought I would. I also like that it has several spots where birds can perch so you can have several birds gathered at once. I also like that you can adjust the seed spouts; I had no idea there were so many types of bird seed and so far, this adapts to all the stuff I've bought for it (smaller seed mixes, and larger). I also think the seed holes are what has kept the squirrels out so far, but if the crafty buggers figure out how to get a free meal from here, I will be sure to update! Overall, the kids and I are enjoying the birds that come and go, and it also seems to be keeping them out of our garden, which is an unexpected bonus! Ha ha!

This bird feeder is large, it has several feed holes and the plastic is sturdy. You will have no problem with the birds being able to land and feed from this feeder. Some of the lighter plastic feeders don't work because they're so flimsy as soon as the bird lands the feeder moves and then they fly away. You don't have that problem with this one. I would recommend, it's a nice size, fills from the top and is sturdy.

My back yard belongs to my dogs, but my front yard belongs to me, and I have several gardens and feeders there; this is by far the best feeder I have. It's solid, easy to manage, attractive, and very versatile- because the feeder holes are adjustable.

THE GOOD:
+ Solid and heavy... although it's summer now I imagine that it will withstand bad weather
+ SIX feeding ports with perches, so I often have more than one guest hanging out at a time, which I love
+ Ports are adjustable - they rotate so you can control size of the hole (and therefore tailor it to your preferred seed)
+ Clear tube so you can see your feed level easily
+ Looks nice in the front garden
+ Handle is also solid-feeling; manages the weight of naughty squirrels who hang on
+ Easy to manage: comes assembled, easy to understand the rotating ports, easy to fill if you've ever filled a tube feeder before (ie use a funnel!).

BE AWARE:
- No squirrel baffle

BOTTOM LINE: A quality feeder, should serve your winged guests well for a long time

The Perky-Pet Premium Heavy-Duty Bird Feeder is just that. It's weather resistant, squirrel proof with rotating ports. Good for sunflower seed, mixed seeds, and thistle seed. Stainless Steel hanger, solid construction.U-shaped offset perches. Instructions suggest a cleaning every two weeks. (Does anyone really do that?) Website for more information www.birdfeeders.com

I already have two feeders in my front garden, and I love watching the birds chow down. I removed those feeders for cleaning while I put this one up - just to see how quickly the birds would respond to it. For some reason, it took them a couple of days to get the hang of this feeder. I initially saw a couple of chickadees checking it out but not taking the seed. I didn't see any usage the next day, but as of day 2, they are all over it. This appears to be best suited for smaller birds. I have it hung from the tallest metal shepherd's crook I could find, and because the feeder is so tall, the bottom of it is only about 4 feet off the ground. This could make the birds on the lowest perches vulnerable to predators (like my cat), so that's something to consider. The higher you can hang this feeder, the better. It's not advertised as squirrel-proof, and I'm sure the squirrels will figure out how to get into it. My metal shepherd's crooks discourage them, but a determined squirrel can climb one and get to the feeder. I haven't seen that happen yet, but I'm sure I will.

I'm not sure what the advantage is to the rotation feature on the perches. I placed them all in the same position (perch on the bottom). The feeder is well designed, very easy to fill, and it's very attractive in my garden. The birds are happy.

This feeder is big and will accommodate several birds. It is extremely well made and heavy, and the squirrels can't tear it up! The u-shaped perches make it harder for the squirrels to get into, as well. It holds a lot of feed, and is super-easy to fill. The bottom comes off for the occasional cleaning. This is a well made very high quality feeder, and the birds are "flocking" to it- lol! You won't be disappointed in this purchase, it's even better in person! I'll be buying these as Christmas gifts for my family.

Reviewer:

This bird feeder came fully assembled. Using it was as simple as ensuring the feeding ports were each oriented for normal bird seed (versus thistle seed which is just a slit), filling it, and hanging it.

The feeder itself feels very study. The plastic tubing feels firm and steady (cheaper store bought feeders go with thinner plastic that feels flimsy), the feeder ports very very solid and are easy to adjust by rotating them for usage with normal bird seed (a cup opening) or thistle (a slit opening). The ports do come out, so you can take the bottom of the feeder off cleaning.. however, it takes a fair amount of force to do this. I was worried I was going to crack the tube (I did not).

The tube holds a good amount of bird seed. The birds immediately found it and have been ripping through my seed. The squirrels have not yet been climbing on the feeder, but I expect that is only a matter of time. This is not a squirrel proof feeder.

Overall, the feeder is a simple and good quality product that functions well. I really appreciate finding companies that produce quality like this.

This is the second perky pet feeder that I own...I also have the smaller version of this that is going on 3 years old now. It is holding up well and I feel that the longer version of it will be well worth it too. The perches are nice and solid, and can be rotated for either a regular blend of seed, or narrowed for nyjer seed. Although the plastic sleeve that encloses the entire feeder may seem cheap to some, or at least not firm enough, I can attest that its just about the best you get these days as to material. I have some older feeders that are made of a very firm plastic that can't be indented with ones fingers, but that is very hard to find these days. This sleeve and its quality is well in line with the cost as far as getting your moneys worth. My other one that is going on 3 years old has its normal amount of scratches and cloudiness, but is intact and with no holes in it from squirrels gnawing. And that is here in New England with the harsh winters and very warm and humid summers. As far as filling it, it's true that top is a little narrow, but I long ago bought a nice funnel for just such purposes, and I suggest anyone that is seriously into bird feeding do also. It works well and saves a lot of aggravation. The top on this is a heavy metal and very solid, and the bottom detaches for easy cleaning that is very important to do on a regular basis..

As for this being squirrel proof in any way, its flat out not. Although its smooth in most places and appears to be difficult for the squirrels to grasp and feed on your seed, its not that either. It's not all the time to be sure, but many a day I have looked out to see my old feeder with a squirrel hanging off it feasting on my seed. This one will be no different. It won't be the most comfortable meal for them, but they will get to it for sure. Please keep that in mind if you happen to have a squirrel problem in your feeding area. Its no better or worse in that sense. All in all, a heavy, very well made feeder with good solid perches and sleeve that will endure many years of birds, squirrels, and weather well that I can highly recommend... : )

Reviewer:

The best reason to appreciate this feeder is that the birds like it! I hung it up and had birds using it within half an hour. So far, it's been largely chickadees and junkos and none of those stupid and loud magpies! I think the perches may be too small for magpies. Magpies have dominated every other bird feeder I've tried. It's nice to see the little guys have a chance.

The feeder was a bit hard to fill, and at first I spilled seeds everywhere. Slowing down and pouring a smaller stream of birdseed solved that problem though I suppose a funnel would have done the same thing in less time. Now that it is full and hanging, the only thing getting seeds out is the birds. We had a good coastal wind yesterday evening, and I watched specifically to see the feeder's response. The feeder did quite a bit of dancing, but a negligible amount of seeds fell out.

I like that this feeder is covered. I haven't seen it deal with rain yet, but I think it will handle that well as the main chamber has a tight lid and the perches have tiny covers. I'll come back and update after a rainstorm.

At first, I wasn't too crazy about the appearance of this bird feeder. But, upon hanging it up and watching birds flock to it, I've changed my mind. The simple design puts the focus on the birds and doesn't get caught in tree branches the way that some of my fancier bird feeders have.

This feeder is true to its description - it is very "heavy duty". The plastic tube is very strong, and the attachments are a hefty metal. It is quite tall and will hold a lot of bird seed. This is nice, since you won't have to fill it as often. There are pegs for birds to perch on, and a strong handle for hanging. This is a great option for attracting birds to your yard.

A bird feeder around our house has to be strong to survive. Our suburban NYC home sees a fair share of aggressive squirrels that can gnaw through just about any bird feeder. But they are not the biggest threat to our fine feathered friends' food supply. Despite the fact that we can drive east and in 45 minutes be in a Big Apple eatery, we have lots of hungry bears who can destroy just about anything short of a titanium feeder. Our yard is littered with chewed up bird feeders. We ordered thus one to see if it really is heavy duty. So far, the bears have stayed away so I can't tell how well it will fare in a one on one confrontation with a 300 lb black bear. I'm pretty sure that it would not defeat that challenge, but it has not been damaged by the squirrels so that's a real plus.

The pluses are its large capacity, heavy metal seed ports (very squirrel proof) and the ability to rotate the openings to allow a variety of seeds to be loaded. We have a lot of thistle eating birds so that really appeals to us.

One star for the capacity. Two stars for the heavy duty design - tube and feeder ports. Two stars for the very clever multi-seed delivery design.

It also has a hanger hoop on top for that kind if feeding placement. It also has a base that accepts a pole placement. Very well done!

If you feed birds, highly recommended...

Before I even opened the box, I could tell this would be an awesome bird feeder. The package was heavy for a bird feeder, especially compared to your typical plastic bird feeder, such as the Perky-Pet 399 Patented Upside Down Thistle Feeder, which is very lightweight plastic. This feeder, however, is more of a plastic pipe than just a flimsy tube. It needs to be to hold the solid metal feeder holes that are inserted on the sides. The feeder holes feature a swivel opening so you can feed smaller seeds more gradually, or bigger seeds in a trough-like fashion, just by twisting the feeder hole. The top is also solid metal and fits snugly over the top of the tube. The clear plastic lets you see at a glance that all the feeder holes are supplied and keeping the birds satisfied.

Because the feeder holes adjust and the top opening is large enough, you can use just about any type of bird seed you like. This allows you to target specific birds that you like, or, you can put a mixed seed in and attract whatever birds are in the neighborhood. I haven't seen any squirrels on this feeder yet, but there doesn't seem to be anything that would deter them, so I guess you could even fill this with chunks of nuts and large seeds if your tastes run more to the mammalian than avian. Another thing I really like is this feeder is big, so it doesn't require constant refilling. Alongside our Perky-Pet B00303 Fly-Through Wild Bird Feeder, and the aforementioned goldfinch feeder, we have plenty to keep the birds coming back. This feature filled feeder is fully five-star fantastic.

Reviewer:

This feeder is amazing! I've always had little cheap plastic tube feeders and while they took care of our multitude of sparrows, they fell apart or broke regularly, spilling seed everywhere.

This heavy-duty feeder has 23 inches of thick polycarbonate tube and the other parts are sturdy powder-coated zinc. The tube holds nearly two pounds of seeds and the six ports are complete with strong U-shaped perches that larger birds can handle. The port openings rotate so that you can adjust an individual port opening if you want to layer different kinds of seed for different species of birds. For instance, you can adjust for a few inches of mixed seed, topped by peanut chunks topped by sunflower seeds. The possibilities are endless and the ports are solid and easy to work.

The top has a big U-Shaped hanger that made it simple to hook onto the chain on my eave. And it's very easy to open the top to pour in more seed. (We do use a wide funnel for that.) The bottom opens for easy cleaning.

When we hung this, we kept one of the cheap feeders up to see what would happen - the birds, mostly sparrows, prefer this, possibly because it doesn't swing wildly to and fro when a dozen of them are winging in and out grabbing seed.

I absolutely love this feeder! Highly recommended.

This is a nice size bird feeder hanging down about almost 2 feet, so you'll need some space to hang it from the stainless steel hanger. It's under 2 lbs but heavy enough to not completely fly around in the wind. The polycarbonate material is clear and is supposed to keep from yellowing.

I think it would make a nice gift for a bird lover, someone who has everything, or at an office gift exchange. It's lovely.

Yes! Finally a high quality feeder that does what it is suppose to do! I was so tired of the flimsy birdfeeders that either fell to the ground or had that cheap plastic feeling. This one is awesome! Easy to fill, the birds are happy and lots of places for them all to perch! Please see my photo of it in use in customer pictures!

Birdfeeders are only as good as how well the birds use them.
This one scored high, almost instantly.
It usually takes a couple of day, up to a week, for a new feeder to be accepted. We have 9 feeder varieties, and feed the birds year-round. It provides a good test situation. For some reason our small songbirds (finches) prefer oil sunflower seeds over nyjer. On other larger feeders, the stronger/larger birds (cardinals, jays, woodpeckers, etc) force the smaller songbirds away. Survival of the fittest.
This new feeder is designed for the smaller songbirds. Within 16 hours (including nighttime) this Perky-Pet Heavy-duty feeder had finches and black cap chickadees eating. That is a sign of "5 claws up" from feathered friends.

6 super heavy duty feeding ports are remarkably designed to rotate making it a large seed feeder (sunflower) to small nyjer seed. One could offer small seed in the lower ports and larger seed in the upper ports, and changing the feeding stations as the seed was consumed and dropped in the clear plastic tube. Nearly 2' tall, it holds a lot of feed.
The label states it is guaranteed forever. You don't get that on many bird feeders.
A top quality feeder and one to strongly consider adding to your feeder grove, or for the person just beginning.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my new bird feeder. The end caps and all the openings for the birds are metal. While the tube is plastic, the overall weight of the feeder had a quality feel to it. When filled with bird seed, the nearly two-foot long feeder is quite heavy. While you will want to find a sturdy branch to tie it to, the heft makes the feeder a bit more wind resistant (a bonus if--like me--you live on the plains).

Reviewer:

I was quite impressed with the Perky-Pet Heavy Duty Tube Feeder by just feeling the weight of the feeder. All of the metal parts are thick, and heavy. The top is very well designed so that the top moves completely out of the way for filling, but does not fall off. It fits into the top of the tube and would not be able to be removed by a squirrel. It is easiest to remove the feeder from the hanger you will put it on for filling. The tube is very thick and seems tough. Only time will tell of the longevity of this part of the feeder. The bottom comes off for cleaning as well as the feeder perch units, though I must say that the perch units are not easy to remove. I was concerned about breaking something when I removed one. I will likely clean the feeder without removing anything except the bottom.
This feeder is big and easy to fill, a good thing for winter, snowy feeding. The perch openings for seeds turn easily to a slit setting for thistle or other very small seeds, and a larger opening for mixed or the black oil sunflower seeds which we primarily feed. The feeder looks very good in the black metal with the clear tube.

I recently moved part-time to the Dallas area so I don't know the local birds yet but I arranged for a constant bird water and food feeder.

I really like the quality and the large amount of food this feeder holds. It appears squirrel-resistant so far. I haven't seen any brave enough to try to jump on.

Being from the north-east, I don't know most of the local birds but they're definitely making this a food and watering station. (I have a humming-bird feeder too.)

This feed is well made an has a lifetime guarantee so I'm not worried about outdoor exposure.

I instantly fell in love with this feeder. I immediately bought a bag of Songbird multiple bird seed and filled it and then hung it to a tree limb within easy view of my apartment window. I placed it before sunrise and then gazed out the window around nine and there was already activity around the feeder from a couple of birds who had already discovered it. One of my fellow residents was walking by and stopped to watch the birds before she proceeded to throw crumbs to some ducks on the property.

This will be a source of pleasure for me as well as benefiting our feathered friends.

It also doesn't spill much with the wind or birds getting on and off of it. Love this feeder! My mother is really into bird feeders and I'm buying her one as well :)

This is a cleverly designed bird feeder. There are 6 feeding ports that rotate so you can use a variety of seeds, from larger seeds like sunflower or small thistle seeds. The feeder is long and narrow, measuring about 23" in length. It feels very lightweight and I am hoping that this will deter the pesky squirrels (although it is not advertised as being "squirrel-proof"). So far, I have not seen them on it although they do get on another feeder hanging close to it. Because of the narrow design, they might have a problem holding on to this one.

Although the instructions say to fill the feeder from the bottom, I had difficulty removing it so I just poured the seeds in through the top which was easy. I have had the feeder hanging on an archway over our breakfast nook window for about a week now and it is almost empty. I have noticed mainly smaller birds feeding at it, like chickadees and goldfinches. The feeder is advertised as being very durable. The tube is made of strong plastic so it will be interesting to see how it holds up. I have had good luck with Perky-Pet products in the past and this one looks like another winner.

This Perky Pet heavy duty feeder is an excellent product that is sure to please any bird lover. I have used a smaller version of this feeder for years, and have been pleased at the variety of birds that now visit my backyard on a regular basis. This feeder is quite an upgrade! It is much heavier than my prior plastic feeder, and much sturdier. It is easy to fill, and with a large number of perches, it draws quite the crowd.

This feeder is well worth the price, and I expect to be using it for years to come.

I always thought that one bird feeder is pretty much like another - until I got this. I like to feed the numerous finches, robins, etc. in my yard but I got tired of the easily spilled, damaged and otherwise annoying feeders. But the Perky-Pet is a different story. It is super well made - it feels like heavy glass, and the black feeder tubes are a sturdy plastic that isn't going to bend or snap anytime soon.

Each feeder opening can be turned to suit thistle seed or larger seed, and I found that the wild bird seed variety pack works best. Thistle can get knocked out by wind, but thistle mixed with larger seed works fantastic.

The feeder drew in more birds than I have ever seen before and all of them seemed to be able to access the seed without trouble. Filling and cleaning is a snap and I love the clean, modern look of the feeder hanging in my yard.

For the price, this is an amazing, sturdy product that will keep your backyard birds happy for years to come!

I'll have to update this as time goes on, as the squirrels in our yard have yet to actually notice this feeder despite it being out for a little while now. They're pretty aggressive and have managed to do some damage to our metal bird feeder, so I'm curious to see what they'd do with a plastic one. So far so good, though.

This is a pretty straight forward bird feeder and opens up fairly easily. It's easy enough to load, although I do need to caution people to make sure that everyone is aware that you need to close the little seed hatches before filling and to open them up after you're completed. (In a humorous note, my mother wasn't aware of this and about a day passed before she finally commented about the lack of birds at the feeder. All is well, I opened the hatches and sure enough, the birds came.)

I like that this is clear, since it makes it easier to tell when we need to fill it. The smaller holes for the seeds seems to keep the larger birds like blue jays away from the feeder, which is nice because it helps give the smaller birds a chance to get seed- something we frequently have issues with when it comes to the larger feeders. All in all, this is pretty good so far.

It's big, holds plenty of seed - if you fill it completely it will last you about a week depending on how many birds you get. It's sturdy and looks good. I have this feeder in the 15 inch size also and it holds just a little less bird seed than this one. I get a lot of finches and chick a dees that love to eat off this. The Red headed wood pecker I get will eat off it too but only for a little bit as it seems to be a little unbalanced for his weight and size. I do have a red breasted grosbeck that comes and stays a few weeks and he eats off this one too. I didn't think he would be able too because his beak is kind of like a miniature parrot beak but he has no trouble eating from this. I only use the wild bird seed blend in this feeder. When I tried just the thistle seed too much of it came out on its own when it was really windy so a lot got wasted. The wild bird seed blend stays in the feeder much better until the birds eat it out. The black birds tried to eat out of it but they were too big to stay on it and I was happy they couldn't use it as they would have cleaned it out in a day. When I fill the 15 inch it lasts about 4 to 5 days. I have a lot of birds and a lot of feeders that attract them so if you only have one or two like this it won't attract so many and it may last longer for you. I have 3 bird bathes in this area too. Almost the end of the season but for several birds that come to my place but I do leave these kinds out all winter. They do just fine even in the cold -30 degree winters here. The birds love having the seed out all winter and these are easy to take down and refill quickly and put back up. My 15 inch feeder like this is 4 years old and still works like new.

We live in the country and use various styles of feeders to bring in different types of birds. Over the years, I have bought bird feeders of all shapes and sizes. Perky-Pet's Heavy Duty Tube Feeder is outstanding! From the moment you take it out of the package, the quality is obvious. This is no lightweight! Instead, it feels solid and substantial. The transparent polycarbonate seed tube is super strong and contains a UV inhibitor to prevent yellowing, while its powder-coated die-cast zinc ports, cap, and base help prevent squirrel damage. Sadly, I cannot speak on the squirrel issue. Our dogs insure that they avoid our house like the plaque .
I love the dual opening on the perches. One setting is for thistle seed, while the other accommodates mixed seeds. The 23" size allows you to fill 1,8 pounds of seed. Depending on the local bird traffic, this could last about a week. Very nice during bad weather.
The unit disassembles easily to clean with soap and water.
This feeder easily earns a 5 star rating!

Wow! All I can say is that I'm really impressed with this high quality bird feeder from Perky Pet. It is sturdy and solidly built, and definitely lives up to its heavy-duty tag. I used to have a regular, inexpensive bird feeder hanging outside my breakfast nook, and it only had a few perch sticks that could only accommodate the smallest birds. With this Perky Pet Heavy-Duty Bird Feeder, I have been able to attract a greater variety of birds. I placed safflower seeds in the feeder and both a male and female cardinal have been visiting it. I have also observed brightly colored finches come by. It is such a joy to watch these birds. The U-shaped perches are unique and conveniently accommodate the birds, while allowing me to observe the birds in all their beauty. This bird feeder comes with a lifetime warranty, and I look forward to using it for many more years.

I wonder how well it will last. It seems to be made of a thick plastic that reminds me of a thicker version of the inserts around men's shirt collars: it can be pressed with regular pressure of the finger. It doesn't seem terribly durable. The black perches seem sturdier, though.

I had no problem with it arriving needing assembly. The top lifts off to allow seed to be poured in. I found this process easy. The hanging was also fine. Mine arrived with several vertical scratches on the clear plastic which were visually sub-par but didn't affect using the birdfeeder. I've come to expect slightly damaged items from the Vine program,

Because it is tall and thin, once the birds start eating the seed, the top perches are not useful for feeding. This seems a bit strange to me, because the birds in my neighborhood chomped through the seed fairly quickly; once half the seed was gone, there were fewer perches available at which they could actually get the seeds.

Not a bad little item, and the birds like it.

This feeder has a nifty mechanism with the lid/hanger portion at the top. Filling it is probably best done with a large funnel to avoid spillage. Mine arrived with three of the perches off, and my hands weren't strong enough to press them back in. My husband had to get them in there for me, and they're solid now. If not for the difficulty in getting the perches in, I'd have given this a 5.

The little birds love this feeder. The big ones can't perch and chase away the little ones. That's great. I can have my other feeder for the bigger birds and this one for the little ones.

It does hang low, so you need a high spot to hang it from.

Make no mistake, this is a huge feeder
Requires modest assembly
At close to 2 feet long, it will hold a lot of seed
Comes empty
Squirrels can and likely will eat from it
It's supposed to survive the wrath of squirrels, but time will tell

Thus far it hasn't let me down, and the birds immediately took to it. I'm not 100% sure of its long term survival, as it doesn't feel indestructible, but for now it's as good as new. I'll update this review as needed.

The direction I have decided to take with this review is a little bit different. I agree with the other reviewers that this is a sturdy, tough, easy to maintain bird feeder. But I would like to present this review from a little bit different perspective. If you recently have moved into a new house or a new apartment with space for something like a bird feeder much like the Perky-Pet featured here I would highly recommend that you go ahead and pick up something like this. This is a new experience for me, but it really is so enjoyable to look out the window and see the birds come in to eat for their dinner. I know this might come across as kind of archaic, or out of touch but as I have been using this bird feeder certain birds are kind of becoming my friends. I will often tell my wife, "Look that old robin is back" or "look honey, a blue billed raspy throat." (I don't really know any other bird types. I am just starting here.) It is very pleasant to end your day with quite reflection at the window feeling companionship with a fine feathered friend. This is something new for me and I think you would really enjoy feeding the birds as well. Pick up a bird feeder and find some new friends.

We have run through a lot of these tube feeders in the past 7 years living in NJ, our squirrels are on the larger size and are death to most bird feeders. I gave up on the standard feeders of this sort last fall when the last one was shattered in a squirrel "launch and bomb" maneuver. (I even tried using thistle seed in it which they are not supposed to like.) Any way, I saw this "premium heavy-duty" feeder advertised and just had to give it a try. My birds love that sort of feeder and I figured maybe, just maybe an industrial strength feeder will last through the fall.

I was impressed by this feeder straight out of the box, the U shaped perches are large and sturdy, the stainless steel wire is a nice length and strength for hanging, the 1.8 lb seed capacity means I don't have to be out there constantly refilling it and the polycarbonate tube is much thicker than the standard tube feeders we have used in the past.

I am withholding a star because I do not have any idea how this will stand up to our squirrels. If it lasts the rest of the year and I don't have issues with damp getting into the seeds (I am using black sunflower seeds), I will raise the ratings. If the squirrels take it out . . . I am not going to be recommending spending this kind of money for a feeder that doesn't hold up. So, far, so good but the jury is still out here.

Recommended for now.

This long tube feeder is designed to last for a while. The tube itself is polycarbonate, a thick but somewhat flexible plastic. The ports and perches are coated zinc.

It is supposed to arrive pre-assembled, but mine arrived with one of the ports unattached. I was unable to get it to snap in and was afraid to force it for fear of ripping the plastic, so I called 1-855-PerkyPet to get advice. After holding for 6 minutes, I talked to a nice woman who tried to find an answer. Finally she said to contact Amazon for a replacement. However, I asked my husband to try fixing it and after about 10 minutes of fiddling with it, he got the part to snap in.

This feeder is said to be "Squirrel Indestructible." Note that this is not the same as squirrel proof. Squirrels can still get seed to eat but they should not be able to destroy the feeder. Hopefully they will be grateful!

The bottom of the feeder is designed to be removable so that you can clean it every couple of weeks. Instructions for doing this are printed on the inside of a label and since no doubt we will lose it, I'm including a summary. First remove the bottom ports by pushing down each of the perches and pulling away from the tube. Then remove the base by turning counter-clockwise. To reassemble, place base on flat surface, line up the base slots with the tabs and snap into place. Then align the port slots with their tabs and snap into place. Hopefully.

I've had a couple of other Perky-Pet feeders that were not as well designed as this one. I have not had it long so cannot judge how long it will actually hold up but it looks strong. It's guaranteed by Woodstream Corporation and assembled in USA and Canada. Some parts are from China.

Keep in mind that you will want to hang this fairly high since it is 23 inches long plus a steel hanger adds another 5 inches.

This is a nice quality bird feeder - construction feels nice and solid and it looks good hanging in the yard too. I only wish they would've designed it to be wider at the time (similar to a funnel) to make filling it easier. As it is, i ended up spilling sunflower seeds all over trying to scoop them into the tube. Other than that, its a great feeder.

We've got a fountain in our front yard, so there's already a large quantity of birds that gather on a regular basis. Adding a feeder seemed like a no-brainer--and a nice distraction (or frustration, depending whose perspective you're viewing it from) for our indoor cats, who already spend a good portion of each day perched in front of the window watching our feathered visitors. Funny enough, their presence behind glass, even when they occasionally get so excited they leap at the barrier, apparently leaves the birds totally unfazed, as we'll regularly have 8-12 happily splashing in the fountain which is only about 3' feet away from the huge picture window the felines are perched in front of. It's a very na-na-na-boo-boo situation. Which we added to, by putting this feeder in a large bush/small tree in front of the kitchen window, adding a second "screen," so to speak, for our three cats to eyeball.

Anyway, because of the existing population we had birds at this feeder by the first afternoon after I'd hung it. It's designed to hold either large, or small seeds, with metal feeder ports that, in theory, can be turned to either allow open access, for large things like sunflower seeds, or down with just a small slit, for smaller seed. Realistically, they turn so loosely that I'm not sure how you'd keep the birds from moving them, thus spilling out if you're using fine feed, but for the sunflower seeds we purchased, it's working fine. Sidenote: this feeder, unlike many and despite the picture with description here, does NOT come filled with a starter load of seed. Not a big deal, but you should be aware it will arrive empty.

Filling is straightforward with the large, heavy metal lid simply lifting off the feeder top. This is good for filling, but I see potential for disaster if a clever (non-bird) critter manages to get this off the branch and onto the ground, because emptying it from above would be quite easy at that point. Of course, if this comes crashing down, I doubt the sides will withstand even short distance impact, so getting the top off too easily might be moot at that point.

The six U-shaped perches are also metal and seem plenty large enough for most songbirds to sit on, while being small enough, as well as fairly thin, not to encourage small rodents from joining the buffet.

This large feeder is billed as "heavy-duty," which I'm more than a little skeptical about, right out of the box. The plastic used for the tube seems extremely lightweight and is quite flexible, giving me doubts about its longevity, and the hook hanger is also thinner than a coat hanger, and just as easy to bend. As I said above, just filling it I was squeezing it enough I was afraid I'd crack it ... Which doesn't give me a great deal of confidence.

Still, despite those concerns, based on first impressions, and initial easy usage by our local sparrow population, this works fairly well, if seeming a bit over-priced for what you receive. At this point, I'm tentatively going with four stars, but will be back to adjust and update my rating if it doesn't hold up to the long haul, especially as we head into colder weather, when the birds become more reliant on garden feeders. I could be wrong, but I'm finding it hard to believe that this thin plastic will survive the winter

Loses one star because I couldn't figure out why they want you to fill it from the bottom. The top removes easily . The bottom was a struggle and the top kept falling off as I tried to open the bottom. That said it's well constructed, solid and sturdy. The birds appear to like it . The squirrels appear frustrated, which is a good thing. Recommended!
